She is a certified K–12 teacher and previously taught middle school English/language arts for five years:Ĭritical thinking blasts through the surface level of a topic. She graduated from Rutgers University, where she studied English and earned her master’s degree in elementary education. Your own thinking and learning will add to the discussions in the classroom and encourage students to share their own thinking.Įlena Quagliarello is the senior editor of education for Scholastic News, a current events magazine for students in grades 3–6. Share what you feel about the learning activities your students are participating in as well as the thinking you are engaging in. Model the language you want students to learn and think about. Share your creativity, imagination, and thinking skills with the students and you will nurture creative, imaginative critical thinkers. We cannot expect students to develop critical-thinking skills if we aren’t modeling those thinking skills for them. It may also mean that you do not always need to respond at all to a student’s answer. The teacher’s role is, therefore, to facilitate this dialogue and select each individual student to give feedback to others. Facilitate chains of dialogue by inviting students to give feedback to each other. Give as many opportunities as possible to students to build on the responses of others. Encourage students in your class to engage in learning conversations with each other. We often feel as teachers that we have to provide feedback to every students’ response, but this can limit children’s thinking. Learning conversations to encourage deeper thinking How do you value students’ critical thinking-do you praise their thinking and demonstrate how it helps them improve their learning? For example, often when we give feedback to students, we may simply say, “Well done” or “Good answer.” However, are the students actually aware of what they did well or what was good about their answer? Make sure you make explicit what the student has done well and where that links to prior learning. This will enable them to build their understanding of what factors are supporting them in their learning. Your language and interactions in the classroom, therefore, have to be aspirational-that if children persist with something, they will achieve.Įnsure that when you are praising students, you are making explicit links to a child’s critical thinking and/or development. To do this, you have to demonstrate that effort, not ability, leads to success. Your aim must be to raise students’ self-esteem. This ideal self may reflect the child that is associated or seen to be the smartest in the class. In this context, self-esteem can be viewed to be the difference between how they perceive themselves as a learner (perceived self) and what they consider to be the ideal learner (ideal self). One of the most significant factors that impacts students’ engagement and achievement in learning in your classroom is their self-esteem. But are we producing children that are positive about teaching and learning and can think critically and creatively? Consider your classroom environment and the extent to which you employ strategies that develop students’ critical-thinking skills and their self-esteem as learners. It seems that we are becoming successful at producing students who are able to jump through hoops and pass tests. In many classrooms I visit, students’ primary focus is on what they are expected to do and how it will be measured. Neutralizaion is ESSENTIAL for good patina. If you delay a day or so between cleaning and patina you'll need to clean the solder with steel wool or a nylon scrubbie pad because solder begins to oxidize as soon as it's cool. This leaves your solder seams shining like silver and they're VERY well prepared for any kind of Patina. I WASH (neutralize) my projects with Household Ammonia and HOT water (and a soft tire brush), then Dawn dishwashing detergent with another HOT water rinse. : 4) Preliminary cleaning of a panel is essential for good patina and avoidance of problems. You're not taking any patina off (unless you rub at this stage) because it will already have eaten into the solder in the minute or 2 it takes to go from application to rinsing. However you do it.DO NOT let that patina dry on the glass. Most of us do what we call "wet-slopping" of a LOT of patina with immediate rinsing. Some people even put the panel in a sink and POUR patina all over it (messy, messy). : The point is NOT to allow any drying of patina and minimum exposure time for the glass. If the panel is large, do one side and RINSE before you do the other side. There's NO WAY you can avoid getting patina on the glass, so just be sure it stays WET. Use several cotton balls or a rag to get it on fast.and RINSE it off the glass with water almost immediately. Forget the business of putting it on with Q-tips etc. The cure for this (assuming you don't have any of the other problems) is to apply patins QUICKLY. This usually occurs just at the edges of the solder and can often be removed with the cleaners mentioned. : 3) if your patina DRIES on a piece it's MUCH more likely to react with the glass. Doesn't come off with patina removers, toothpaste or polishes. You're MUCH more likely to see this happen immediately and it's probably as permanent as any stain. Probably, it's the combination of the metallic solder. This reacts on the surface with patina to cause a problem. REDS, BLACK and Greens are manufactured sith a mineral based pigments. Sometimes is removable early into the problem.often not. This is more likely to be an overall discoloration. Some regional waters (well water esp.) contain minerals which react with the patina and/or flux causing the "rainbow" discoloration effect. Copper is a 'plating' that sits on the surface. Black is an acid that etches a chemical reaction into the metallic solder. Keep in mind that this applies to BLACK PATINA, because COPPER is another entity altogether. So, I will give you all the theories I know about why. I've tried many times to duplicate the glass discoloration problem in my little glass studio but it just won't happen. : Christine, I can't talk about this problem from experience because it has NEVER happened to me. Svn checkout svn:///mplayer/trunk mplayer & \ Now to finally download and compile the svn MPlayer, bear in mind that you will be asked to also download the FFmpeg git source during this process which you should allow by pressing 'enter' when directed. You could return to this section from time to time to update x264 by running git pull and then recompiling, and I would still recommend some experimentation with either FFmpeg or x264 for easier encoding. Note that static linking with x264 and others now works in the current svn of MPlayer. enable-static -disable-cli $ARCHOPTS & \ configure -prefix=$HOME/mplayer_build/mplayer_deps/usr \ Nevertheless many people are still keen on MEncoder (several scripts and applications still use it) so the following single command installs a local copy of this great encoder's libraries for MEncoder to use. The best encoder for h.264 video is x264, probably better used directly from the x264 commandline or even indirectly through FFmpeg. There is a continuing drive to bring access to these file formats under the libavcodec umbrella so hopefully one day these codecs will no longer be necessary. Sudo cp -v all-20110131/* /usr/local/lib/codecsīear in mind that codecs for 64 bit users are pretty minimal, the real benefits here are for the 32 bit users.
